Badge Description:

Highlights programs that explore foreign language learning, geography, celebrations, traditions, and civic awareness to foster global citizenship and cultural literacy.

Eligibility Criteria:

To earn the Global Language & Culture Badge, providers must demonstrate a commitment to developing cultural literacy and global awareness through the following:

Required Components (Must meet all):

  • Cultural and/or Geographic Exploration: Students regularly explore countries, regions, or global cultures through food, art, customs, maps, or history.

  • Language or Communication Exposure: Instruction includes learning or exposure to world languages—spoken or signed—or multilingual experiences.

  • Respect for Global Perspectives: Program emphasizes empathy, inclusion, and awareness of different lifestyles, beliefs, and practices across cultures.

  • Interactive and Immersive Activities: Students engage in hands-on activities such as cultural celebrations, international games, cooking, or storytelling.

  • Intentional Curriculum or Structure: Provider uses a curriculum, framework, or routine that clearly integrates global themes and fosters cultural understanding.

Suggested Qualifiers (At least 2 recommended):

  • World Language Practice: Students engage in learning or using a second language through songs, games, or conversation.

  • Cultural Arts or Music: Activities explore traditions through folk music, global dances, crafts, or instruments.

  • Global Celebrations or Holidays: Students learn about cultural events and customs through hands-on holiday-based activities.

  • Geography & Mapping Skills: Programs include basic map reading, landform identification, or global travel themes.

  • Civic Awareness or Global Issues: Students explore age-appropriate topics like fairness, sustainability, or global responsibility.

  • Pen Pal or Cultural Exchange: Programs connect with others globally through letters, videos, or shared projects.

  • Multicultural Storytelling or Literature: Students read or hear stories from diverse cultures to build global understanding.

  • Diversity & Inclusion Dialogue: Lessons promote empathy, fairness, and respect for all people and cultures.
